Matcha Margarita
Hiya friends! We spent last weekend at the beach getting appropriately crispy while visiting my family, and then we returned home to some muggy humid New Orleans summer weather and to be honest we're thinking it's about time to get back to the beach. But we probably shouldn't because we do actually have work to do and our tiny pup, Fox, can't come with us to the beach and we've already used up our allotted three days per year away from him.
There was a weird onset of PBB (my new acronym for Post Beach Blues), which is basically what happens when you're having a lot of fun and then it all gets taken away and you trade in sangria for an upsettingly lumpy protein shake and your morning run on the beach (well, like, a fast walk) is traded in for answering emails from ten million people who don't know whether you are the Matt or the Beau. This is the Beau, by the way.
There are some perks abut being home though. My shoes have a much more appropriate sand to air ratio, I haven't woken up a little bit drunk in days, and when I walk into my favorite coffee shop it's like a Cheers moment and everyone literally knows my name and my order which is maybe slightly less impressive considering there are only two people that are usually there and they are both employees. I used to get embarrassed about people knowing my order at coffee shops or bars? Is this a weird thing? "Like, oh here's the Beau guy - so predictable." But now, I've turned a new personality and the idea of walking in somewhere and actually having to mumble through my order (large almond milk latte with an extra shot of basic white gay and Instagram likes) is so tiring. So, those are some of the reasons I'm happy to be home. It really doesn't take much.
Anyhow, being home means I've also been able to jump back in to the recipe testing game. This week's science experiment: Matcha Margaritas with a Matcha Sugar Rim. Can we call them matcharitas? I think we can.
I'm just going to assume you're skeptical of how the flavors of matcha and, well, margarita, work together. Imagine delicious iced green tea, cool and refreshing and perfect for a summer afternoon when your window units are failing and everything around you - hopes, dreams, ambitions, ice cream - is melting. Imagine that but now imagine there's a little bit of an extra kick - from tequila. Like actually maybe a big kick. Add to that magic the bright flavors of lime and orange juice and the sweetness of agave nectar to balance it all out. Wait, what was that? Did we just reach a collective nirvana? No.
But we did just describe your new favorite summer time cocktail. Well OK it's our new favorite and I really hope you'll try it out and love it along with us.
We're no newbs to the margarita game either, by the way. There was that one time we made that peach and Serrano margarita and that other time we made that game changing budget top shelf margarita. We're also not new to the matcha game. We've literally got sixteen matcha recipes on this site. We know a thing or two about how these things work. Think of this recipe like a trust fall but instead of us just catching you, we're also dunking you mouth first into a pool of a remarkably refreshing matcharita. Wow, look at all the good we do! Full recipe is below + of course let us know if you try it by tagging us on Instagram or using our hashtag #betterhomoandgarden :)
Matcha Margarita with a Matcha Sugar Rim
makes 1 but can easily be doubled, tripled, or quadrupled
1 1/2 oz good quality silver tequila
3/4 oz lime juice
1/4 oz fresh orange juice
3/4 oz agave nectar
1/2 teaspoon Aiya Cooking Grade Matcha
for rim
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon
Wet the entire rim of your glass with lime juice by cutting a 1/4" slit into a quarter of a lime and running it around the lip of the glass until the entire surface is evenly damp.
Place the granulated sugar in a shallow bowl and the tablespoon of matcha in a separate small dipping bowl. Run the rim of the glass through the sugar, followed by the matcha. Set glass aside.
Combine all margarita ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake for about 30 seconds, until the shaker frosts over. Pour margarita and ice directly into prepared glass, and garnish with lime if desired. Enjoy!
