The Bunk Room Plans & Design Direction

We’ve been talking about this bunk bedroom for ages and it’s FINALLY time to make it happen. I don’t know how it took us so long… something about releasing the book and dealing with the monster kitchen renovation and building the potting shed, and laundry. Lots of laundry. Why is there always so much laundry?
Anyway. It’s here. It’s happening—for real this time! The bunk bedroom is set to be built in early June by our resident in house construction worker, Matt.
While he’s been busy trying to figure out how to actually build the beds, I’ve been busy thumbing back and forth between paint samples and wallpaper and for-the-thirtieth-time deciding the shiplap should go vertical and not horizontal.
We took a trip to HomeGoods, one of our favorite places to go finding new high quality pieces for remodels, and picked out some decor to help jump start the design process. Our favorite thing about HomeGoods is that you can find those “never knew you needed” items at unmatched prices. We ended up finding five items that I think will be key to this room’s decor and help us really nail that “could be a kid’s room but wouldn’t be weird for my dad to sleep in when he visits” vibe. Not too childish, but also not super ornate or elegant. Just fun and joy-filled. And perfect complements to the fungi wallpaper I’d already picked out!
Our HomeGoods trip landed us with a new material for the room as well—rattan and caning, which we think we’ll want to work into other parts of the room’s design down the road.

So here we are, at our starting point: a shopping trip to grab some decor and inspiration and a sketch of what the structure will look like. Now it’s time to get building!
